Thousands of people leave their impoverished Central American countries to get into the USA. By crossing the Northern border of Guatemala into Mexico they’re embarking on one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world. In a small border town in the farthest South of Mexico migrants try to jump on a freight train that shall carry them to the US-border. But hardly anybody manages to make the 5,000 km trip. Already on the outset of their journey they get mugged by youth gangs and fall prey to corrupt border officials. They fall exhausted from the train or get arrested in large-scale raids by the Mexican migration police and army, who jail them for days and deport them. Equipped only with a small digital camera the director sets off to this small border region. He accompanies the migrants in the periphery of the train stations during their grueling waiting for the beast, as they refer to the train. He daily witnesses assaults by armed border units and succeeds to infiltrate the nearby deportation prison. He meets women, men and children, who recount the traumatic experiences of their odyssey. Yet there is no going back for them, despite repeated deportations. He spends days in a miserable hostel where people live, who were crippled by the train and/or cruel muggers. This whole drama on the new Southern border of the USA is reflected in the history of the Salvadorian migrant Noé. During the shooting of several months the director happens to encounter Noé repeatedly by chance. Then comes the tragic end. A moving – in every sense of the word – film about the end and beginning, hope and doom of the American Dream.
Synopsis (deutsch)Tausende Menschen verlassen täglich ihre verarmten Länder Mittelamerikas, um in die USA zu gelangen. Mit dem Grenzübertritt im Norden Guatemalas nach Mexiko begeben sie sich auf eine der gefährlichsten Migrationsrouten der Welt. In einem kleinen Grenzort im äußersten Süden Mexikos versuchen die Migranten auf einen Güterzug aufzuspringen, der sie bis an die US-Grenze bringen soll. Doch die 4.000 km lange Strecke schafft kaum niemand. Bereits am Beginn der Reise werden sie Opfer der Überfälle von Jugendbanden und korrupten Grenzbeamten, fallen ermüdet vom Zug oder werden in groß angelegten Razzien der mexikanischen Migrationspolizei und Armee gefangen genommen, tagelang eingesperrt und abgeschoben. Nur mit einer kleinen Digitalkamera ausgerüstet, begibt sich der Regisseur in diese kleine Grenzregion. Er begleitet die Migranten am Rande der Bahnhöfe bei dem zermürbenden Warten auf die Bestie. Er wird Zeuge täglicher Übergriffe bewaffneter Grenzeinheiten, schleust sich in das nahe gelegene Abschiebegefängnis und trifft Frauen, Männer und Kinder, die traumatische Erlebnisse ihrer Odysseen schildern und für die es trotz wiederholter Abschiebung kein Zurück gibt.Er verbringt Tage in einer kümmerlichen Herberge von Verkrüppelten, die dem Zug oder brutalen Überfällen zum Opfer fielen. Das ganze Drama an dieser neuen Südgrenze der USA spiegelt sich in der Geschichte des Migranten Noé aus El Salvador wider. Während der mehrmonatigen Dreharbeiten kommt es zwischen ihm und dem Regisseur zu wiederholten und zufälligen Begegnungen, bis es zu einem tragischen Ende kommt. Ein bewegter und bewegender Film über Anfang und Ende, Hoffnung und Scheitern des Amerikanischen Traums. Prender el viaje para cruzar México significa recorrer una de las rutas migratorias más peligrosas del mundo. En una pequena region en el norte de Guatemala y el sur de México de se cruzan las esperanzas y fracasos de hombres, mujeresy niños audaces que en su viaje se ven confrontados con la distancia que existe entre el sueño americano y la pesadilla méxicana. Filmada por una sola persona con una pequeña cámara digital, ésta pelicula nace como un video diario sobre encuentros inesperados, choques y asaltos en la nueva frontera sur del Norte. Es tambien la historia del salvadoreño Noé, al cual el director lo encuentra en varias etapas del rodaje y que encuentra un final trágico. Credits
